Congratulations to the best and brightest in ophthalmology celebrated in 2019 Power List!

Last week The Ophthalmologist released its Power List for 2019. The Ophthalmologist called for nominations for the Top 50 inventors, mentors, emerging leaders, surgical pioneers and champions of change within Ophthalmology. This year with their ‘Five top tens’ they showcase the brightest and best ophthalmologists in the field.

This year there were a record number of nominations – almost 2,000 – across the five categories. Each nomination celebrates an individual who has made a significant impact on ophthalmology.

The NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is very excited to see so many familiar faces on the list this year. We are very pleased to have worked alongside and/or to have supported many of the ophthalmologists, who made the list this year.

Pearse Keane in the Emerging Leaders - movers and shakers influencing the world of ophthalmology – and beyond

There were a number of familiar faces who made the mentor category; David (Ted) Garway-Heath, who has also just been named as a NIHR senior investigator. Declan W.Flanagan, John Marshall, Alan Bird and Adam Mapani - seasoned clinicians, professors and educators guiding and inspiring the next generation of ophthalmologists.

Last but not least our very own Director Sir Peng Tee Khaw made the Surgical Pioneers categories - honouring trailblazing surgeons presenting alternative approaches to the ophthalmology community.

In an interview for the Ophthalmologist’s Power List Sir Khaw named leading and establishing the UK national Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) in Ophthalmology as one of his career highlights. He goes on to say, “The BRC has underpinned a great deal of ground-breaking therapies, such as cell and gene therapy, through to clinical application. We have helped drive and support initiatives such as the eye module of the UK Biobank, which is now proving to be an incredible general resource for ophthalmology and projects, like the use of artificial intelligence in ophthalmology with Google DeepMind”
