Acknowledging the NIHR

Who should acknowledge NIHR Moorfields BRC?

All research staff who carry out any patient/healthy volunteer clinical and/or experimental medicine research (involving human samples, bloods, cells etc) within the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and/or Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Why should I acknowledge NIHR Moorfields BRC?

In addition to directly (co-)funding projects and staff, NIHR Moorfield BRC supports essential clinical research infrastructure at the Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Hospital. Therefore if your research is translational or clinical in any way, it is supported – either directly or indirectly – by the BRC . Please acknowledge this in all your peer-reviewed publications. Acknowledgement of NIHR funding is used by the Department of Health & Social Care to justify future budgets and is particularly important and visible during the BRC bid process. It is therefore essential for the BRC to continue to support research projects and infrastructure. Acknowledgement of BRC funding is also a contractual requirement and a condition of funding. We maintain regular reports on publication acknowledgements and this information may be used to guide future funding decisions.

What is the correct wording?

Sample wording for each type of BRC funding can be found below. If you’re unsure about wording, please contact us.

Acknowledging the NIHR BRC in scientific journals

Currently there is no requirement for BRCs to submit their research articles/papers to the NIHR in advance of publication (other than when accompanying a draft press release), but researchers must acknowledge the NIHR in all research publications, using one of the templates below.

If the research associated with the scientific paper has not taken place within the NIHR Moorfields Clinical Research Facility (CRF), please use JUST the BRC acknowledgement (below)

If the research associated with the scientific paper has taken place wholly or partly within the NIHR Moorfields Clinical Research Facility (CRF), please use the COMBINED BRC and CRF acknowledgement.

BRC acknowledgement (template i) :

“The research [was funded / supported] by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre based at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NHS, the NIHR or the Department of Health.”

Combined BRC and CRF acknowledgement (template ii):

“The research was funded by [name of funder, which could be the NIHR] and supported by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and the NIHR Moorfields Clinical Research Facility. The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NHS, the NIHR or the Department of Health.”
