Funding
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and NIHR Biomedical Research Centre: Moorfields (BRC) provide support across the full grants cycle.
We work closely with NIHR Clinical Research Facility: Moorfields (CRF), Moorfields Eye Hospital Research and Development (R&D) and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. We primarily focus on pre-awards beginning at project development, though to contracting.
We support clinical trial and study applications made by Moorfields staff and partners. The requirement is that the project should be linked to Moorfields in some way e.g. recruiting patients/staff, accessing patient data/records or using Moorfields facilities.
We can help with all or some of the below.
Support available
We work with you in developing grant proposals. All aspects of your project are considered including supporting evidence, study design/approach, statistics, PPIE, research inclusion, health economics, regulatory compliance along with how to pitch and help with the level of complexity involved.
- We advise and work with you on preparing budgets including Schedule of Events Cost Attribution Tool (SoECATs) for clinical research.
- We identify suitable funders and funding calls – including government and NIHR, charity and industry funders.
- We offer guidance on sponsorship and ethics.
- We review your draft proposals, helping to tailor to the funder and ensuring completeness.
- We connect you with experts e.g. statisticians, pharmacy, Reading Centre and specialists in different areas of ophthalmology across both UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields.
- We advise on contracts associated with funding awards e.g. sign-off on awards and setting up collaboration/data sharing agreements
Projects we support include:
- Career development – pre-doctoral, PhD, post-doctoral fellowships
- Project grants (e.g. interventional trials, observational studies, early phase studies, data analysis projects (retrospective and prospective))
- Infrastructure awards

Checklist
- We ask all applicants to contact us 3 months before a grant deadline, or as soon as you have an overview of your project. This eases the grant application process, allows focus on draft reviews which affect success outcomes, and aid in the concurrent development of an ethics application if funding is awarded.
- Our process is to firstly discuss the project over a call at what we call a ‘Research development group’ meeting. This is an informal meeting for us to understand your project, determine the support and resources your project will require and to also provide you with some guidance. This can prevent delays after funding approval.
- If your project involves Moorfields patients (involvement or data), staff or facilitates, or if you are unsure, get in touch with Mohammed or Kabir for more information.
- If you have a project idea and are looking for a funding opportunity, please get in touch
