Retinal vascular and immune-mediated eye diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR) and uveitis, account for over 50 per cent of severe visual impairment certifications in the UK.
The NHS spends over £3.7 billion each year on management of glaucoma, AMD and DR but outcomes differ greatly between patients for reasons that are not understood.
We will investigate how blood vessels in the eye and immune cells can be managed to save sight across different eye diseases, using our world expertise in microvascular biology.

Scientific discoveries
We will make diagnostic and treatment discoveries based on many different types of eye tissue characteristics (phenotypes).
Treatment discovery
We will better assess clinical tissue data to understand our patients and their conditions and diseases. This will be important for early phase trials and to discover more effective and targeted treatments.

New ‘AutoMorph’ tool
PhD student Yukun Zhou describes how a computer programme called ‘Automorph’, developed by him and his team, can automatically analyse photographs of the back of the eye.
