Everyone living a full lifespan will experience at least one sight-threatening eye condition in their life highlighted increasingly by our ageing population. The human and economic burden will continue to increase, especially with common diseases such as age-related-macular degeneration, glaucoma, and corneal disease.
The ability to slow or reverse any of the degenerative processes found in these conditions, would have a profound impact on our ability to treat them and prevent visual disability and visual loss.
Importantly, if these therapies could be delivered as single long-lasting treatments the impact would be even more profound. For example, the ability to safely lower eye pressure in glaucoma with a single short operation or laser would revolutionise its treatment worldwide.

Aims
Expertise and infrastructure
Our expertise and infrastructure led to the first in Britain facility for human cell therapy called the NIHR-BRC-Cells-for-Sight-Unit. We aim to utilise this facility to create and develop strategies for cell and tissue replacement to prevent and combat these ageing conditions.
Track record
Our BRC has a strong track record of device and technique development. We have some of the world’s leading eye surgeons and surgical innovators, and have supported infrastructure for device development, CDTraining and co-applications with UCL-Engineering. We will continue to progress our innovative surgical interventions in order to improve the delivery of regenerative therapies. Single surgical or laser treatments have game-changing potential.
