Patients and Public
Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) is about building meaningful partnerships between researchers, patients and the public to shape the relevancy and acceptability of eye health research.
Through a range of activities, we work with patients and the public to inform, discuss, listen and make decisions about our research. This involvement helps improve research and ensures it provides maximum benefit to the people and communities most in need.
Get involved
You can get involved with us in a number of ways. Please have a look at how we interact with the patient and public on different levels and at the options open to you to join in.
Get involved
To do this we actively:
- Consult, listen to and involve people, patients, carers at all stages of our research
- Offer support and training that meets the needs of our public contributors, researchers, and staff
- Involve patients, carers and people in decision-making processes within our governance and our research
- Work collaboratively, flexibly, inclusively and respectfully to accommodate the needs, interests, concerns of all
- Encourage a culture where researchers can communicate in and engage with patient and public audiences.
What does patient and public involvement look like?
Some examples are:
- Sharing views and experiences with researchers
- Membership of an institution’s governance group
- Design of a research project
- Prioritisation of research
- Offering advice as members of a project steering-group
- Commenting on, developing and disseminating research findings and materials
- Undertaking interviews with research participants
Examples
We have collated some examples of our public and patient involvement and engagement work to show you what it can look like in practice.
