He recognised the overwhelming demand for timely treatment and saw the potential of AI to speed up the process.

The partnership quickly gained momentum, as Prof. Keane and Hassabis’s teams began developing an algorithm capable of analysing OCT scans to identify patients in urgent need of care. The early results were promising, demonstrating the algorithm’s ability to detect early-stage wet AMD with remarkable accuracy. This innovation not only has potential to save the sight of thousands in the UK but could benefit millions worldwide, transforming how retinal diseases are managed in clinical settings.

As the research progresses, the collaboration has continued to evolve, with ongoing refinements to the algorithm and plans for its implementation in everyday clinical practice. The relationship between Moorfields, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, and DeepMind stands as a model for interdisciplinary collaboration, showcasing how AI can elevate medical standards and improve patient outcomes.
