As the forums continue and we engage with more clinical academics, we’ve identified three key recurring themes. Each speaker has focused our attention on network, ambition, and unwavering familial support.
The forum opened with a welcome from Professor Sir Peng Khaw, followed by Professor Mariya Moosajee discussing her journey as a clinical academic. Mariya said that although some recommend having a mentor, it’s more important to cultivate a “board” of mentors. This brought the conversation once again back to the importance of a network. Her talk also pressed the importance of citizenship. Mariya emphasised that the added value you give to your organisation will come back to you.
Our next speaker was Professor Anthony Khawaja who also gave us a condensed account of his pathway as a clinical academic. A key driver for Anthony was that you can make a big difference in research.
