Professor Alastair Denniston ranked top 10 in HSJ’s ‘50 most influential people for NHS tech in 2026’

NIHR-supported Professor Alastair Denniston has been ranked 7th in the Health Service Journal’s ‘50 most influential people for NHS tech in 2026’. The recognition highlights his leadership in shaping artificial intelligence regulation, enabling innovation while ensuring strong safeguards remain at its core.

Prof. Denniston chairs the UK National Commission on the Regulation of AI in Healthcare, overseeing a multidisciplinary panel of experts advising on a world-leading regulatory framework. His work is in line with the NHS’s 10 Year Health Plan to seize the opportunities provided by new technologies and innovations to deliver better and equitable care for all patients.

Prof. Denniston is a Senior Investigator with the NIHR. He is a Professor of Regulatory Science and Innovation at the University of Birmingham and co-lead of the Data, Diagnostics and Decision Tools research theme at the NIHR Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre. He also serves as Non-Executive Director of the Health Research Authority and Executive Director of CERSI-AI, the UK’s Centre of Regulatory Science and Innovation in AI and Digital Health. 

Prof. Denniston pioneered the field of oculomics, which applies artificial intelligence (AI) to detect systemic health conditions using simple eye scans (working with Prof. Pearse Keane, Siegfried Wagner and others at UCL/Moorfields). The retina offers a unique view of the vascular and nervous systems, enabling researchers and clinicians to analyse its layers and use AI to predict a wide range of diseases.
