Professor Omar Mahroo
“One of ARVO’s key strengths is its broad, international membership. I am excited to contribute as chair to the Global Members Committee and to help ensure that researchers around the world feel represented, supported, and connected within the organisation.”

Prof. Mahroo is the BRC’s Clinical Academic Trainees Development Lead in our Academic Career Development team. He has played an important role in providing opportunities for three core underrepresented groups in ophthalmic research: nursing, visual electrophysiology, and paediatric ophthalmology. Seven candidates have been awarded funded protected time under the ‘NIHR Infrastructure/School Pre-Application Support Fund’ to develop their careers in clinical research. The BRC also supports his research, including a landmark genetic study that shed new light on how the eye develops its sharpest vision in the retina.
