What was your journey into ophthalmology?
My journey into ophthalmology started with a background in psychology, where I developed a strong interest in human behaviour and how we perceive and process visual information. This naturally led me toward vision science. Following my PhD, my research shifted toward using data-driven approaches to understand visual function and how to test ‘real-world’ visual function.
Can you tell us about your current research and its impact?
My current research involves developing and testing a smartphone application called OverSight designed for digital phenotyping in individuals with visual impairments. By collecting passive data, such as mobility patterns (step count etc) and phone usage, we aim to gain insights into the daily experiences and challenges faced by these individuals.
How has your work been supported by the NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)?
The NIHR Moorfields BRC played a key role in supporting our work, particularly in the development of the Oversight app. They facilitated a Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) focus group with individuals with visual impairments, which was crucial in shaping the app to ensure it was both useful and accessible. Their support has helped bridge the gap between research and patient needs.
What does the future of ophthalmology look like?
The future of ophthalmology is increasingly data-driven, with digital technology playing a key role in improving disease monitoring and personalised care. AI and advanced statistical models will allow us to move away from one-size-fits-all testing strategies and instead tailor assessments to individual patient needs.
