Researchers, clinicians, and professional services staff have been taking part in a collaborative group, Researcher Engagers Group, to work together on public engagement activities at the NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre for the past two years.
The group membership is fluid, it includes staff at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and has members from the Friends of Moorfields.
Meeting every two months or so at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology the group has a wide range of activities which are always accompanied by a pizza lunch and conversation.
- Visits from charities in the eye health sector to speak about funding and ways to connect with specific audiences.
- Presentations by experienced researchers who have created elaborate artistic public engagement work. Like Siegfried Wagner and Caroline Kilduffs’ Windows of the Soul collaboration.
- Creating engagement content for use with the public and patients for various open days, awareness days and festivals.
- Presentation from UCL and NIHR Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement and Funding professionals
The group has worked together to produce engaging content for the Moorfields BRC Open Day, the Bloomsbury Festival of Science and Art and for Rare Disease Day.
