The researchers made a successful application to The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s Strategic Partnership Award for Research Collaboration (SPARC) for their project “Using advanced deep learning-based image-to-image translation techniques to assess diabetic macular ischemia on fundus photographs”.
The collaboration aligns with two of our research themes, Vascular Disease and Inflammation and Imaging, Visual assessment and Digital Innovation.
The visitors Prof Carol YL Cheung, Associate Professor at the the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences with her scientific officer Dr Emma Anran Ran, and postdoctoral fellow, Dr Gabriel Dawei Yang met with Vascular Disease and Inflammation theme lead Professor Sobha Sivaprasad. Prof. Sivaprasad is a world-renowned leader in the field of diabetic retinal disease.
A further in-depth discussion took place with Dr Luke Nicholson, the Director of the Medical Retina Service, on developing deep-learning models with state-of-the-art imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to assess diabetic macular ischemia (DMI) on fundus photographs, and other projects related to diabetic retinal diseases.
Prof Cheung also met Professor Sir Peng Tee Khaw, and Dr Siegfried Wagner, to seek advice on clinical implementation of AI, and to deepen the collaboration on retinal imaging in Alzhemier’s disease, respectively.
During the visit Prof. Chueng delivered a talk, entitled “Deep Learning for Diabetic Retinal Disease: What is new?” for staff from Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Insitute of Ophthalmology.

Prof Carol Cheung was awarded the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s Strategic Partnership Award for Research Collaboration (SPARC) for her and her team’s visit. The SPARC award was established in 2021 as part of the CUHK’s global engagement effort to support research projects in collaboration with global priority institutions.
We are happy to be working in this strong collaborative and international model partnering beyond our borders only strengthens our work.
