The NIHR Biomedical Research Centre: Moorfields (BRC) is pleased to invite applications for the research skills for eye health course at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
This is an excellent opportunity for Moorfields staff to strengthen their public health and research expertise in eye care, with no cost to individuals or departments, as the programme is fully funded through the NIHR BRC: Moorfields Training Award.
Why does this matter?
The course is designed to equip health professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to reduce blindness and visual disability through a public health lens. It also supports personal development and encourages collaboration across local, national and international eye health networks.
Course overview
Two cohorts are planned, beginning 31 August 2026 and 1 February 2027, with the programme running over 18 weeks. Participants will complete four four week modules followed by a two week final assessment period. Learning is delivered online and flexibly, with a minimum expectation of five hours per week. This includes engaging with course materials and taking part in facilitated discussions with content experts and peers.
Throughout the programme, participants will explore global challenges in ophthalmology, essential epidemiology and statistics, research methods, and the planning and implementation of eye care services from global to local perspectives.
While the course allows some flexibility (participants may dip in and dip out, however a minimum commitment of 5 hours per week is expected), applicants should ensure they have the capacity to complete all requirements, including full engagement with the online content, four end of module tests, a pre-recorded presentation and a time-limited written assignment.

This course is ideal for Moorfields staff including ophthalmic nurses, clinical officers, programme managers, optometrists, orthoptists, dispensing opticians, ophthalmic residents, ophthalmologists, medical students and other allied health professionals – particularly those looking to build research capacity and contribute to global eye health.
